A Letter To The Japanese Police 日本の警察への手紙

警察へ、


あなたの仕事をやってるとわかるんだけど、警察の仕事というと確認するために自転車を乗りながらヘッドフォーンを聞いてたりしてるかどう か、人を止めるより重要なやることがあるんじゃない？日本の治安がいい。俺も安全な国と認めてる。あなたはヘッドフォーンを聞くこととかスケボーとかを防 ぐことより重要なやることがないかもしれないんだ。しかしそういうどうでもいいことに集中してるよりもっと重要なことに集中すればいいと思わない？そうい えばこの前の２０年間は日本の景気が悪いんでしょう？政府もお金があまりないし。もしかして警察の何人が首になったら政府が助かるかもしれないよね。とに かくあなたはやっぱりそんなに重要なやることがないのでそこで働かなくてもいいんじゃない。

しかもスケボーがだめという法 律は日本で成立してない。実は自転車よりスケボーは危なくないんだ。もし俺はスケボーを乗ってたら俺を止めて危ないと言ったりする理由がない。危なくはな いんだ。ただのスケートが付いてる木板なんだよ。自転車より操りやすいし小さいし。そしてあなたはスケボーに詳しくなかったら人を止めて危ないと言ったり するとプロフェショナルに見えない。ちなみに俺は外国人だからといって何も知らないで俺のことを想定することもプロフェショナルに見えない。失礼にする理 由がないんだ。俺は日本語喋ってるしあなたに失礼じゃないし。もしかして協力してあげないで逃げたほうがよかった？正直に言うと協力するよりそうするのが 簡単なんだよ。ってことはもし俺は失礼に扱われるかわかったら協力してあげる意味ないでしょう？だから俺が止まってほしいなら重要な犯罪が犯されたみたい に扱ったり、俺の個人情報を確認するため俺に行かせたりするの代わりに、俺が税金であなたの給料を払ってるのように俺を扱ったほうがいい。俺は協力してあ げたいんだけどそうしても外国人だから失礼に扱われてる。逃げる理由をくれないでください。

Hey Police Officer,


I know you're just trying to do your job, but when I think about the jobs of police officers, I usually think about something a little more important than stopping people to check if they're wearing headphones when they're riding their bike. Japan is a safe country. I get that. You might not have very much else to do besides checking for bike lights, headphones, and skateboarding. But don't you think there's more important things you could be doing rather than focusing on the things that really don't matter? You know, Japan has been in an economic slump for the past twenty years after all. Maybe getting rid of a few police officers would save the government some money. You don't seem to be doing a whole lot anyways. How about really doing some work for that paycheck?


There is no law that says skateboarding is against the law. In fact, it's safer than a bicycle. If I am cruising on a sidewalk, there is no reason for you to stop me to say that it's dangerous. It's not. It's just a piece of wood with a pair of skates on it. It's easier to control, and smaller than a bicycle, and making assumptions about how dangerous it is when you know nothing about it doesn't make you look very professional. Nor does making assumptions about me because I'm a foreigner. There is no reason to be an asshole. I'm talking to you politely in your own language. Would it be better if I skated away without being cooperative? That's actually easier than politely talking to you. If I know you're going to be an asshole before I even talk to you, what incentive is there to cooperate? If you want me to stop, instead of pretending like I have committed a serious crime and bringing me to the station just to take down my information, talking to me like I'm someone who helps pays your salary with my taxes might be a good start. I want to cooperate. Please don't give me a reason to run. If I'm cool to you, be cool back.
